On 11th November 1918, the armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War 1, taking effect from 11am.
Every year, NWLNL mark the end of the Great War with a minute’s silence at 11am. Players, officials and spectators “commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts” [www.gov.uk]. This year has extra significance being the Centenary for the end of the War. Always an emotional moment; thank you to all teams/players/scorers/umpires/supporters for respectfully marking the occasion.
And so to the matches: Ashby played host to Division 2.
Bosworth Thorns and Overseal started the day with a great match. Both teams played well with great sportsmanship on court. Overseal just pulled ahead in each quarter to finish with the win.
Whitwick Flames and Donington Diamonds were next. Both teams played well and, at 11am, play stopped for the minute’s silence. Diamonds took their 3rd win from 6 matches.
Swadlincote Starlings and Coalville Rockets ended the day at Ashby. Both teams played consistently with the final quarter being the best for both teams. Starlings secured another LB and Rockets continued their winning streak (3 wins from 3 matches).
Division 1 played at Newbridge.
EDITED: Coalville Jets and Gracedieu Diamonds took to the court first. Jets had a great start, winning Q1 and a consist game with 10 goals in each of the first 3 quarters. Diamonds stormed the 2nd and 3rd quarters. It all came down to the 4th quarter and with 12 goals a piece, both teams did an excellent job.
Ashby Fire and Gracedieu Pearls then played. Fire are aiming to finish top of the year and new Division 1 team, Pearls, put on a valiant performance but Fire were just too dominant.
Bosworth Rose and Ashby Flames were next and both teams played well. 2 fairly even teams as far as wins are concerned. Flames are gaining valuable quarter bonus points in their matches, but their win today gives them an extra boost. Roses still secured a losing bonus point.
Blaby and Swadlincote Swifts finished the day at Newbridge with another closely fought match. A strong start from Swifts saw them winning at half time, but Blaby came back fighting to take the win with just 1 goal in it.
Well done all teams.
