LYNDA’S “12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS” TOP TIPS #10

Throw-ins: the little known facts

When taking a throw-in, a player’s foot must be within 6 inches of the line but not touching it; this includes as you move into the throw – don’t let your tip-toe touch the line. Once a throw-in has been set, footwork rule applies, so no moving around.

The umpire who controls the line will call the ball is out of court and is the one to look to when setting your position.

The player taking the throw-in must wait for everyone to get back on court before releasing the ball.

The player taking the throw-in must not go off-side to get the ball or step behind an off-side position when holding the ball. (i.e. WA can’t hold the ball off-court whilst standing behind the goal circle goal line.)

When releasing the ball, the player taking the throw-in must pass it into the correct third(s) and not throw ‘over a third”..

  • Goal Line throw-in = Goal Third
  • Goal Third sideline throw-in = Goal or Centre Third
  • Centre Third sideline throw-in = anywhere.

The player taking the throw-in has 3 seconds from when set (and all players are on court) to release the ball.

The opposition must:

  • allow the player taking the throw-in back on court after they have released the ball;
  • observe the obstruction rule (be 3 feet from the player taking the throw-in);
  • observe the contact rule;
