LYNDA’S “12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS” TOP TIPS #4

A penalty has been awarded against me.  Can I instruct my teammates as to where to go?

No.  If an umpire has called a penalty against you, you must move quickly to the side of the opposition player taking the pass and not interfere with play. This includes instructing teammates, attempting to intercept the ball and contacting the opposition.

Provided the player taking the penalty is in the correct position, they may wait for the infringer to get in position or take the penalty. The infringer may resume playing once the ball has left the penalty taker’s hands. The 3 seconds is measured from when BOTH players are in the correct position. If the infringer decides to dawdle to the side of the penalty taker, this could be deemed as delaying play.
