LYNDA’S “12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS” TOP TIPS #3

The Umpire’s decision is final.

Umpiring in any sport is not an easy task and any player who has attempted to umpire (whether for fun or to become qualified) will know how hard it is.

Umpires deserve players’ respect regardless of whether or not you agree with their decision. They have to make a split second decision if a player has made an infringement. Footwork (late takeoff?), contact (or was it contest?), distance (it is the umpire’s 3ft, not your 3ft), off-side, over a third, 3 seconds (try counting to 3 in your head whilst doing 100 other things), catching the ball (replay?), throwing the ball (short pass). At the same time, they have to observe the whole court, not just where the ball is.
