Match Day 11

Another day of netball – I think we’re all looking forward to the Christmas break now.

At Ashby, last season’s promoted teams (Ashby Flames and Gracedieu Pearls) met for the first time this season.  A close game, there was very little between them but Pearls managed to pull away in Q2 and, despite a push by Flames in Q4, Pearls were able to take the win.

Ashby Fire and Measham Tridents were next.  Fire are desperate to win and going on court unbeaten this season, were in a strong position.  Tridents had a rough start without all their players and Fire took full advantage.  Q4 was exciting and close with both teams only getting 6 goals (previous Quarters had seen Fire in double figures).  Fire remain unbeaten at the top of Division 1.

Division 2’s Gracedieu Gems and Coalville Rockets then played and it was another closely contested match.  Rockets took the lead in Q1 and were able to inch away with each passing quarter to win the match.

Newbridge was a little more dramatic.

Hinckley Hornettes and Whitwick Flames started in the cold hall.  A steady match, Hornettes averaged 9 goals a quarter.  Flames struggled against Division 2 front runners giving Hornettes their 8th win from 8 matches.

Bosworth Thorns and Whitwick Ignite then played.  Thorns had a great match and just kept increasing their goals each quarter.  Ignite are always so cheerful on court and don’t let anything phase them. Thorns had their highest goal count for the season so far.

Measham Mermaids and Overseal started their match but it soon became clear there were problems on court.  Unfortunately the fans hadn’t been turned on in the Sports Hall by the on-site duty manager, so the combination of the cold air and the hot, sweaty bodies breathing heavily on court was causing condensation to form on the court surface.  It became unsafe and player safety is our first priority.  A discussion between the umpires and team captains, and it was agreed that the match would stop at that point (time and score noted) and the teams would rearrange to finish the match at a later date.

This meant that Swadlincote Starlings and Donington Diamonds match was postponed also.  Starlings were a little relieved (as well as disappointed) as they had had their Christmas do the night before.

League table is exciting to see – 1 weekend left of League matches for this half of the season (bar a couple of Div 2 matches that still need to be played).
