Match Reports – Week 10 – 10.11.19

A fantastic array of games continued at Ashby and Newbridge

Swadlincote Swifts vs Gracedieu Diamonds:
An end to end game with both teams having to step up to the mark. Swifts pulled away a few times but Gracedieu applied the pressure and brought it back keeping swifts on their toes. The score ended 49-42 to swifts, it was a great game to play and watch. Congrats to both GOGs Emily Brockwell and Ellen Raine.

Donington Diamonds v Bosworth Roses
A really tough end to end game this week. Both teams started strong with the first quarter being fairly even ending 11-11. The second quarter saw some great defensive play from both teams as the ball was end to end with Donington eventually pulling away to finish the second quarter 25-20. Bosworth’s shooters were on fire in the third quarter bringing the score back to 1 goal in it, with the final quarter seeing Bosworth get a great run of goals despite Donington pushing on until the final whistle, the game ended 50-44 to Bosworth. Player of the match for Donington was GA Joanne Peel with some great shots from all over the circle. A great game for spectators.

Bosworth Roses v Donnington Diamonds
This was the first time these 2 teams have played each other and it was a friendly yet competitive match with both teams looking for the win.
There was good play through mid-court and strong attack from both sides with confident and strong shooting by both teams and Q1 ended on a draw. It was clear this could be a good, close match.
Donnington came back on court determined and placed lots of pressure on Roses defence during Q2 and their attack also stepped it up. The Donnington shooters worked well around the D and at half time, Donnington led by 5 goals.
The final 2 quarters were played as competitively as the first 2 with Roses stepping up their play and the pressure. Despite the strong Donnington defence, Roses shooters worked well in the D, playing the ball round and gaining valuable rebounds ultimately resulting in Roses pulling ahead and taking the win.
Well played to all today.

Melbourne vs Whitwick
A Few changes in the Melbourne team today due to work (shout out to our great emergency service workers, 999 calls never stop) and Holiday commitments.
A close first half saw Whitwick ahead with Melbourne unable to close the gap for the rest of the match. Some great attacking circle work from both teams. great long passes into the D and then great shooting from Melbourne but it just wasn’t enough to pull it back. Well done Whitwick, great game to play in and great netball by all.
Melbourne might of been lacking in players but they made up for it in teamwork and kept their heads held high to the end. This game saw Mandy L in her first match back since a very bad injury over 2 years ago. Go Mandy, great work and great to have you back on the court.
A very heart felt 2 mins silence saw both teams come together to remember our fallen.

Hornettes Gold Vs Ashby Tornados
When Hornettes Gold met Ashby Tornados in the Cup round earlier in the season, only 8 goals had separated them so Hornettes knew they had to put out a 4 quarter performance to secure the win. They started strongly from the first whistle & by Q1 had a 7 goal lead which was increased to 12 by half time. Ashby continued to challenge, turning over ball but Hornettes defensive trio of Laura Davies, Jess Pickering & POM Jess Rainbow were rock solid in defence & picking up interceptions & rebounds which were neatly converted by the in form shooters. It was a lovely match by both teams but by Q3 Hornettes were in control & pushed it out in Q4 for a final score of 60 – 33

Whitwick Flame vs Melbourne
The first league win for Whitwick Flame this morning 54 – 33.
Flame made a strong, fast start and kept the lead throughout the match. Melbourne pressed hard keeping us on our toes, but our excellent shooting and work around the D helped us secure victory!
Melbourne showed great sportsmanship during the match and we all came together for the two minutes silence for Remembrance Sunday as one.
For the second week on the trot, Leanne Cooper (GA) secured MVP for her amazing play. Thanks to Sam and Chris for umpiring today!
Whitwick Flame.
10.15 Ashby 😊

Gracedieu Pearls vs Swadlincote Starlings
Gracedieu Pearl’s met Swad Starlings today. It was an incredibly close match throughout. Both teams were hungry for the win.
Pearl’s lead the first 3 quarters, unfortunately in the last quarter we lacked fresh legs and Swad took the lead, taking the win by just 1 goal!
A great match by both teams.

Swadlincote Starlings Vs Gracedieu Pearls. 24-23. Swad started well scoring the first 2 goals, but soon Gracedieu pulled away ending the 1st quarter 10-4. Gracedieu continued strongly in the 2nd quarter, Swad made changes in the 3rd quarter bringing on Louise and Mandy, the dynamics of the game changed, and although still down the gap had closed. During the 4th quarter all was to play for, and with 2mins to go Swad drew level, they managed to take advantage of their centre and took the lead with 30 seconds to go. Gracedieu didn’t have time to take the lead back. The win went to Swad.
